IGU ROUNDTABLE: RESEARCH METHODS IN TIMES OF COVID-19

Dr Moses Okech was invited by the International Geographic Union (IGU) to share RYVU findings and approaches during the virtual roundtable “Mobilising Geographical Research Methods in Times of Covid-19” which took place on the 24th of January.

The roundtable was organised by the IGU Commission on Research Methods in Geography, an active group of geographers promoting an international dialogue on research methods as a vital tool for advancing geographic knowledge and research practices across different regions, countries and traditions.

The roundtable “Mobilising Geographical Research Methods in Times of Covid-19: How has geographical research transformed during the pandemic?” was part of the IGU’s “Methods in Geography” series of virtual workshops. RYVU team member Dr Moses Okech was invited as a guest speaker, alongside Dr Jessica Finlay (University of Colorado, USA), Dr Zhiwen Gao (East China Normal University, China), and Dr Lotem Robbins (Bar Ilan University, Israel); whilst Dr Chiara Giubilaro (University of Palermo, Italy) and Dr Dan Malkinson (Haifa University, Israel) joined the activity as discussants.

During the roundtable, speakers shared their insights on particular research strategies adopted since Covid-19, and how the impacts and changes have been perceived in different global contexts and areas of the Geography discipline. Dr Okech shared the experience of undertaking the RYVU project in Uganda during the pandemic, and particularly the roles of the Youth Advisory Boards informing RYVU approaches to navigating Covid-19 challenges in terms of the design and implementation of the project activities.

The event was attended by over 40 participants from different countries, and RYVU team member Professor Sarah Mills also supported the facilitation of the discussion, focusing on the lessons and legacies of mobilising geographical research methods during Covid-19 and how they might inform future practices in the field.
