IVCO 2021 THINK PIECES
The Conference of International Volunteer Cooperation Organisations (IVCO) is organised annually by the International Forum for Volunteering in Development (Forum) and, this year, has been hosted online by ActionAid Hellas.
In the lead-up to the conference, RYVU team members have contributed with two provocative think pieces to engage with participants on the conference’s theme “Inclusive Volunteering for Global Equality”. First, in the piece “A poor man cannot volunteer”, Moses Okech, Matt Baillie Smith, Sarah Mills and Bianca Fadel discuss RYVU findings on the diverse and sometimes contradictory meanings that the term ‘volunteer’ holds in Uganda, and the knock-on effect that these diverse understandings have on how organisations and policy-makers facilitate volunteering. Second, in the piece “Decolonising thinking & practice of volunteering for development”, Bianca Fadel challenges assumptions about the ways volunteering offers a pathway to development.
