RYVU EXHIBIT IN LOUGHBOROUGH, UK

From 19 June to 4 July 2023, the RYVU Photo Exhibition ‘Volunteering, Displacement and Livelihoods, Photographs by Young Refugees in Uganda’ will be displayed in Loughborough, UK as part of the Refugee Week 2023.

Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, resilience and creativity of refugees and asylum seekers, encompassing hundreds of activities across the globe and in the UK. In 2022, the RYVU exhibit was displayed at Northumbria University’s Gallery North in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK as part of the World Refugee Day celebrations. This year, we are happy to announce that a new display of the RYVU exhibit will be accessible to the public at Loughborough University’s Martin Hall Exhibition Space to celebrate World Refugee Day 2023, as part of the UK Refugee Week agenda of events.

The exhibition will be open from 19 June to 4 July 2023 (weekdays only), 12pm-2pm. It is free to attend and no booking is necessary. On World Refugee Day (Tuesday, 20 June), Professor Sarah Mills will be giving a talk (5pm-6pm), followed by a tour of the exhibition (6pm-7pm). For this activity, a free online pre-booking is needed through this link.

Visitors will have a chance to see a selection of key images taken by young refugees in Uganda as part of project’s photovoice methodology, through which RYVU participants took photos and explained how they perceived volunteering. It provides a unique perspective on the ways young refugees use volunteering to build their lives and livelihoods. It also challenges existing thinking about who volunteers, why they do it, and the impacts it has.

As part of the exhibit, visitors will also be able to play with RYVU’s interactive games, which were developed as part of the project’s impact and dissemination strategy to provide accessible and creative tools raising awareness of the issues young refugee volunteers face and explore what volunteering means to them.
