IAVE WEBINAR SERIES “THE COMMON GOOD - CREATING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE THROUGH VOLUNTEERING”
On 10 October, Dr Bianca Fadel was invited as a guest speaker in the webinar series “The Common Good – Creating a Sustainable Future through Volunteering” convened by the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE).
WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2023: RYVU EXHIBITION AND TALK AT LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY, UK
For World Refugee Day 2023, the RYVU project showcased the project’s exhibition with a public talk at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England. This year’s international theme was ‘hope away from home’, and RYVU activities on World Refugee Day also contributed to National Refugee Week in the UK.
RYVU EXHIBIT IN LOUGHBOROUGH, UK
From 19 June to 4 July 2023, the RYVU Photo Exhibition ‘Volunteering, Displacement and Livelihoods, Photographs by Young Refugees in Uganda’ will be displayed in Loughborough, UK as part of the Refugee Week 2023. Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, resilience and creativity of refugees and asylum seekers, encompassing hundreds of activities across the globe and in the UK.
RYVU POLICY AND PRACTICE DISCUSSION
On 10 May, Dr Bianca Fadel was invited as a guest speaker to join the Community of Policy Practice series of online conversations as part of the Capabilities in Academic Policy Engagement (CAPE) Project.
RYVU GAMES IN THE 2023 FESTIVAL OF LANGUAGES
The RYVU project is taking part in the 2023 “Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages”, an opportunity to celebrate diverse languages and cultures and the connections of the North East of England to the world through a range of online and in-person events and activities.
INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY 2022: LAUNCHING RYVU POLICY BRIEFINGS AND DOWNLOADABLE GAMES
The RYVU project is celebrating this International Volunteer Day with the launch of a series of policy briefings and interactive games in Arabic, English, French and Swahili, providing tools and recommendations from the research findings for improving volunteer policy and practice amongst refugee communities.

RYVU activities and the photo exhibit “Volunteering, Displacement & Livelihoods: Photographs by Young Refugees in Uganda” were the subject of a television report in the local channel Tyne & Wear TV.
RYVU PHOTO EXHIBIT IN NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, UK
The RYVU team was pleased to host the photo exhibit “Volunteering, Displacement & Livelihoods: Photographs by Young Refugees in Uganda” at Northumbria University’s Gallery North, in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Between 20th June and 29th July 2022, the exhibit was visited by nearly 500 people, including community members, university students and staff, and NGO stakeholders from refugee organisations in the Newcastle.
RYVU WORLD REFUGEE DAY ACTIVITIES IN UGANDA AND THE UK
This year, the RYVU project celebrated the World Refugee Day across borders, with simultaneous activities happening in Kampala and the Nakivale refugee settlement, in Uganda; and Newcastle upon Tyne, in the UK. In total, the dissemination activities were attended by more than 800 people, celebrating refugees’ strength and courage while disseminating learning from the RYVU project.

Participatory photography, or photovoice, has been at the centre of RYVU’s work in Uganda over the past few months. This is an exciting part of the project’s methodology which required the development of particular tools and strategies to engage with refugee youth in participatory and creative ways…

PRESS RELEASE - NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY
Professor Matt Baillie Smith, from the Northumbria Centre for International Development, will lead a new ESRC/GCRF research project with colleagues from the UK and Uganda over the next two years. Prof. Baillie Smith will be the Principal Investigator on the international project “Skills acquisition and employability through volunteering by displaced youth in Uganda” (total grant value £862,003).
